VANCOUVER -- Even after going down to 10 men with the score tied 1-1, the Vancouver Whitecaps kept pressing for a winner that looked inevitable. Then one of Major League Soccers most ruthless goal poachers made the most of his only real chance of the night. Erick Torres headed home the winner off a pinpoint cross from Marky Delgado in the 81st minute Saturday as Chivas USA downed the frustrated Whitecaps 3-1. Second-half substitutes Nigel-Reo Coker and Darren Mattocks both had great chances to give Vancouver the lead after Whitecaps defender Jordan Harvey was sent off in the 69th minute, but neither man could find the range, leaving the door open for Torres winner. The 21-year-old Mexican has now scored in five straight games for Chivas (6-7-5), which picked up its fourth straight victory and is unbeaten in six. "The boys a good player. Torres, make no doubt about it," said Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson. "We had three defenders in the box. It was a super cross but we cant give him opportunities because hell take them and thats what he did." Vancouver did a good job containing Torres until that critical moment, which made the end result even more maddening. "He spins off one time and makes a good header and scores the goal that kills us a little bit," said Ousted. "Im disappointed conceding that kind of goal." Despite being down a man, the Whitecaps had great chances to grab a winner of their own before that goal, but Reo-Coker missed a sitter in the 74th minute before Mattocks failed to connect moments later in front of Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy. "Another day that could have gone in," Reo-Coker said of his opportunity that flashed just wide. "Obviously it didnt go in today and thats that. We still had some other chances but this is going to be a tough game to swallow. "I think we have to be proud of how we played and performed. Even after going down to 10 men we probably had the two best chances in the whole game." Torres, meanwhile, now has 13 goals on the season for a Chivas team that has scored just 20 times. Agustin Pelletieri and Leandro Barrera had the other goals for the visitors, while Carlyle Mitchell scored his first in MLS for Vancouver (6-4-7). "Disappointed. Gutted is another word," said Ousted. "I said before the game we shouldnt take this lightly. I dont think we did but we didnt get the result." Vancouver led 1-0 at half-time but allowed a free header off a corner to Pelletieri two minutes after the break before things went from bad to worse when Harvey was sent off by referee Armando Villarreal in the 69th minute for his two-footed challenge on Chivas midfielder Oswaldo Minda. Harvey had already left the locker-room by the time it was opened to the media. "I think we started slow at the start of the second half," said Robinson. "That was probably the disappointing thing from the game because I didnt feel under any threat really in the first half. The 10 minutes after halftime is big in any game and they got the goal and got the bit between their teeth." Vancouver will be disappointed with the dropped points at B.C. Place Stadium after a strong showing in last weeks 1-0 victory over the Seattle Sounders. "Ive said all along youve got to win at home and pick up points on the road," said Robinson. "I just said to them in there we just need to try and win an extra away game now." After Torres nosed his team in front, Vancouver had one last gasp in stoppage time, but Villarreal gave a free kick to Chivas after Pedro Morales poked a shot past Kennedy that the keeper had a hand on just in front of the goal-line. Barrera then scored on a rush with the last kick of the game after the Whitecaps sent Ousted forward on a corner. "It was a very tough game," said Chivas head coach Wilmer Cabrera. "Difficult team, quick, with young players with quick transition. "We didnt lose our composure. For the second half we tried to adjust a few movements -- try to move the ball a little bit wider, try to move the ball a little bit quicker." Things started brightly for Vancouver on the night, with Mitchells header from six yards out in the 27th minute marking not only a personal milestone, but also the Whitecaps first goal off a corner in 2014. Robinson had talked about wanting a quick start, like the one the Whitecaps got against Seattle seven days earlier, but Vancouver couldnt get anything going until about 10 minutes into Saturdays match. Once the Whitecaps got their legs moving in midfield they started to boss the game, but were unable to find that final pass, which would eventually cost them. "I wont fault any of my players today because they performed what I asked, they did everything I asked," said Robinson. "Obviously we came out on a bad result." On Saturday, the paths of Drew Tate and Kevin Glenn cross again as opposing quarterbacks. Their backstory is of Tate the prodigy forced by injuries to give way to Glenn, the insurance policy that paid off with 20 wins and a Grey Cup appearance during his two seasons as a Stampeder. You can watch the two face off on TSN1, TSN3, TSN4, TSN5 and TSN GO at 9:30pm et/6:30pm pt, or listen to the game live on TSN 1040 and tsnradiovancouver.ca as Scott Rintoul and Giulio Caravatta have the PxP call. Pregame coverage on TSN1040 begins at 4:30pm pt. with Bob The Moj Marjanovich and Chris Burns. Claimed in the expansion draft by Ottawa and traded to the B.C. Lions to start this season, Glenn continues to be a well-worked, winning backup to Travis Lulay, who re-injured his shoulder in his one start this season. Glenn ranks third in throwing yards with 2,703 behind Torontos Ricky Ray (3,206) and Winnipegs Drew Willy (2,977). With Bo Levi Mitchell a week away from returning for Calgary, Tate will get his second straight start this season and just the 10th of his career Saturday. Tate, 29, and Glenn, 35, are in different stages of their careers in terms of experience. Tate is the developing quarterback still trying to get games under his belt. With the amount of work hes had in recent years, it feels like the CFL is trying to eke every last game out of Glenn before he retires. The quarterbacks have different strengths. Tate is a scrambler who can turn trouble into a touchdown. Glenns smarts and patience in the pocket gives the offence time to develop. But Tate feels some of Glenns game rubbed off on him during their time as teammates. There was a lot I learned from Kevin on the field and off the field, Tate said Friday. My locker was right next to him so there was just a lot of insight he could give to me personally, professionally. He had great poise. He had a quick release on a quick game and had good pocket awareness and good poise to let things develop downfield. Hes smaller than me which is probably the only quarterback Ive ever seen shorter than me. It was neat to see him work and just how he approaches the games and how he is in the huddle and in the locker room. Glenn, who is five foot 10 to Tates six feet, says even though he has more experience than Tate, there was still something to learn from the younger quarterback. Im never too proud to say that Ive learned something from a guy who may not have as many years in the league as me, Glenn said. I respect the fire that he has. To be able to overcome some of those injuries he had, it was tough. To have that injury-plagued (label) hanging over your head and still be able to come back and be positive and successful. Hes the type of guy that belieeves he can overcome and do anything.dddddddddddd. Its one of those things that you may have inside of you, but it never comes out because you may have never been put in that situation. Calgary (10-2) lost 31-15 to Montreal last Sunday, but still owns the best record in the CFL. The Lions (7-5) are fourth in the West Division, six points back of Calgary and coming off a 40-23 loss to Toronto. The Lions are the only West Division team to defeat Calgary and the only team to beat the Stamps at home so far this season. Trailing 11 points at halftime, B.C. rallied to edge the hosts 25-24 back on Aug. 1. Stampeders running back Jon Cornish didnt play in that game. He missed six games in July and August with concussion symptoms. The CFLs Most Outstanding Player and leading rusher last season also didnt travel to Montreal last week. Cornish will be back in the lineup Saturday. Hed been cagey about his reasons for staying home from Montreal. Cornish revealed Friday that he landed on his head and felt his neck lock up in a 40-33 win over the Toronto Argonauts on Sept. 13. I was being cautious, Cornish said. Cornish rushed for a CFL single-game high of 174 yards against Toronto. With six games remaining, the 29-year-old from New Westminster, B.C., ranks fourth in league rushing with 587 yards in five games. The Calgary and B.C. defences are coming off their worst games of the season, but Cornish says the Lions still pose a stiff challenge. B.C. middle linebacker Solomon Elimimian leads the CFL in tackles with 98. Theyre one of the premier defences in the league and I always relish every opportunity I get to play against them, Cornish said. I get to improve as a player, playing against their players. Calgarys defence was averaging 15 points per game against in the first 10 games of the season, but allowed 33 and 31 the last two games respectively. Technically were doing good things, said Stampeders defensive co-ordinator Rich Stubler. We just have to play with more passion and get the job done. Hopefully we have our mojo back and we go back and do the things we do well. Tate completed Calgarys comeback win against Toronto with 6-for-6 passing, two touchdown throws and a two-point convert pass. He ran for two touchdowns against Montreal, but completed half his 30 passes for 152 yards. The return of Cornish gives the Texan a weapon the quarterback didnt have last week. He definitely will make a difference so find a way to get him the ball and make sure its a clean handoff every time, Tate said. I definitely felt I took a step forward in practice this week so I want to continue that into the game. Its really just getting the ball to the playmakers in space. Dont turn the ball over and have a good run game. We do all those things, we should be all right. ' ' '
