NEWARK, N.J. -- It didnt take Claude Giroux long to get over being left off the Canadian Olympic hockey team. Hours after getting the disappointing news that he would not be going to Sochi, Giroux woke up the road-weary Flyers with a power-play goal and Brayden Schenn scored the game-winner at 1:50 of overtime as Philadelphia beat the New Jersey Devils 3-2 Tuesday night after giving up a late short-handed goal that forced the extra session. "I mean, yeah, anytime someone takes something away from you, you want to prove them wrong," Giroux said after the Flyers finished off a 5-1 road trip with their second straight come-from-behind win. "But you know what? I put that behind me. I just have to move on here. Just play my game. Its a fun game out there. ... Im not going to stress myself with that." The 25-year-old Flyers captain seemed to have a good chance to make the Canadian team. He had 12 goals and 26 assists coming into the game and was playing good hockey. It wasnt good enough. "Well, you know Ive kind of accepted that Im not going to be on the team. Thats fine," said Giroux, who has eight goals and 11 assists in his last 13 games. "There are a lot of good players out there. It cant be an easy job for them to pick all those players, so right now Im just worried about the Flyers and keep winning games." Scott Hartnell also scored for Philadelphia and Ray Emery made 31 saves to win for the eighth time in nine games. Michael Ryder tied it at 2 on a short-handed goal with 30 seconds left in regulation. It came on a great feed from defenceman Marek Zidlicky, with goalie Martin Brodeur on the bench for an extra skater. Adam Henrique also scored for New Jersey, which is 0-2-1 in its last three games. Schenns game-winner was set up by a great back-door pass by defenceman Nicklas Grossman from the left point. He saw Schenn moving down the right side and found the centre in the right circle for a shot that beat Brodeur, who had 25 saves. Brodeur had made a close-in save on Schenn on a late power play to keep New Jersey in the game. However, Schenn, who was cut across the stomach with a skate earlier in the game, got his revenge when he took a pass from Grossmann that Brodeur didnt think the defenceman was capable of making. "Its kind of mind-boggling a little bit because we are better than what the results on the ice are," Brodeur said. Giroux tied it 1-all with a power-play goal at 5:18. Hartnell, who has points in eight straight games, gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead with a shot from the left circle on a quick counterattack. The Devils chances of tying the game seemed dim when Travis Zajac high-sticked Giroux with less than 2 minutes to play, but they found a way. "I thought Giroux played an outstanding game, from start to finish," Flyers coach Craig Berube said. "I thought he was physical, competed and did everything possible out there." The Flyers were unable to capitalize on a 1:44 power-play advantage at the start of the third period, but they didnt fail when Devils defenceman Mark Fayne was called for interference at 4:27. Less than a minute into the extra-man advantage, Giroux rifled a shot from the top of the left circle that beat Brodeur into the top corner of the net. The goalie may not have had a good view of the shot with Hartnell and Wayne Simmonds screening him. It was Girouxs 13th of the season and it gave him a team-high 39 points. Hartnell made the breakout pass out of the Flyers zone to Schenn and he hustled up the ice to take a return pass that he quickly put into the net for his 10th goal. The Devils took a 1-0 lead in the opening minute of the game on a great individual effort by Jaromir Jagr. He skated around a Flyers defenceman in the right circle and centred the puck across the crease. It tipped Ryan Clowes stick, and Henrique came out from behind the net to tap it in for his fourth goal in six games. The point was the 1,723rd of Jagrs career, tying him with former Pittsburgh Penguins teammate Mario Lemieux for seventh in NHL history. Devils coach Pete DeBoer said it was the second straight game in which his team outplayed an opponent and came up short because it failed to take advantage of scoring chances. "Its frustrating because we are not getting rewarded for the effort," DeBoer said. NOTES: When the Flyers play Montreal on Wednesday, it will be their first home game since Dec. 23. They have won nine straight at Wells Fargo Center. Their last loss was 3-0 to Brodeur and the Devils. ... Michael Raffl returned to the Flyers lineup after missing two games with a concussion. ... Grossmann had two assists, giving him his second multipoint performance in 427 career NHL games. Jordan Henderson Jersey . Should Matt Ryan be benched? Cullen: Im inclined to give Ryan a little more rope, especially with Tampa Bay the Falcons first opponent coming out of this weeks bye, but Ryans mediocre play over the past three weeks has made it feasible to look at other options for your starting QB slot. Really, as long as he has Julio Jones and Roddy White healthy, Id be reluctant to take Ryan out of my lineup, but I have him hovering around the 11-13 range for quarterbacks which leaves him as a low-end starter. Fisher: It’s been a major theme for the Falcons the past couple years and while there is definitely a discrepancy in Ryan’s home and away splits (21.38 points per week to 15.66), the more concerning trend is his play of late. The seventh-year quarterback hasn’t surpassed 17 points in any of the last four weeks, and if you remove his monster Week 1 performance (when there was still hope in Atlanta) Ryan’s weekly average drops from 18.52 to 16.67, very much in the QB2 range. We’re in the thick of bye weeks (Ryan himself gets a rest this week) so he may be worth a start in the short term, but I’d be leery of starting Ryan in a playoff game. Hetherington: Absolutely not. Ryan is the franchise quarterback for the Falcons and no matter how much of a clearing house the team undergoes after the season, Ryan will remain under centre. When you look at the problems of the Falcons, Ryan is pretty low on the list. Despite the bad interception on Sunday, Ryan’s QB rating is still 93.1 on the season. The only justifiable reason I can see to bench Ryan would be to save his health instead of playing him behind the makeshift offensive line the team has been forced to assemble due to injuries. Ryan is still the future in Atlanta, TJ Yates and Sean Renfree are not. How good could Ahmad Bradshaw be if the Colts ever give up on Trent Richardson? Cullen: Bradshaw is a productive and versatile back, who can gain yards on the ground or in the passing game. While it comes as no surprise that hes more productive than Richardson, Bradshaw doesnt have a great record as a workhorse back -- only once in his career has he had more than 250 touches in a season, and that was 2010. That doesnt mean Bradshaw isnt a valuable fantasy commodity as is, because the Colts offence is giving him opportunities to score, but hes also coming off a season in which he played just three games, so Id have some concerns about whether Bradshaw could handle (ie. stay healthy with) a substantially heavier workload. Fisher: While it’s frustrating to see Bradshaw split opportunity with the far inferior Richardson – and to think what could be if he was the Colts’ workhorse in the backfield – Indianapolis’ handling of the 28-year-old back is the best case scenario for both Bradshaw and his fantasy owners.dddddddddddd. The Colts are keeping injury-prone Bradshaw fresh; there is as good a chance the answer is “on the IR” as it is “leading his position in scoring.” Should should prefer a year of Bradshaw putting up RB1 numbers over a couple weeks of league-leading numbers. Hetherington: Bradshaw could likely be a high-RB1 as a feature back on the Colts, especially given his pass catching ability. However, I think the Colts are best left using Bradshaw in tandem with Richardson and not overworking the injury-prone back. Bradshaw has only played all 16 games in a season once in his career, and is coming off a severe neck injury last season. If he could stay healthy, I believe Bradshaw would likely be putting up Matt Forte numbers as a lead back, however the risk may not be worth the reward. Will Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders finish as Peyton Manning’s best WR duo ever? Cullen: I dont think so. The 2004 Indianapolis Colts had a really productive pair -- Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne -- that combined for 2,323 yards and 27 touchdowns (and since were talking duos, Brandon Stokleys 1077 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2004 are merely a footnote) and last years Broncos had Thomas and Eric Decker putting up 2,718 yards and 25 touchdowns. Even if Thomas and Sanders can match or surpass the yardage totals, theyll need to find the end zone a whole lot in the second half of the season to rank as the most productive pair of wideouts in Mannings illustrious career. Fisher: I’m not going that far. Thomas is an absolute stud and holds up his end of the bargain as the top guy. My hesitance is with Sanders, whose 2014 stat line is heavily boosted by a huge Week 8 performance. Prior to last week Sanders was having a very Eric Decker-like year; still a great achievement, but not quite one half of Manning’s best tandem ever. With Julius Thomas still very much around to steal touchdowns away from the receivers, I can’t see Sanders doing enough to make history alongside DeMaryius. Hetherington: Thomas and Sanders have been two of the best wide receivers in the league this season working with Peyton, but best ever? I’m not sure. I believe the combination of Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne in 2006 with the Colts will go down as Peyton’s best ever duo. The two both had over 1300 receiving yards that season and at least nine touchdowns. I also see an argument being made for Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker in 2013, who both had at least 1288 yards and 11 touchdowns last season. Nonetheless, I’ll stick with Harrison and Wayne.
