The National Hockey League and the Players Association hope to generate between $75 million and $100 million from the rekindled World Cup of Hockey, according to their preliminary estimates. A person familiar with the matter told TSN that the eight-team tournament, which is scheduled to be held in September 2016, will raise about half its revenue from the sale of broadcast and internet streaming rights. The NHL and NHLPA have predicted those rights may garner close to $50 million. NHL senior vice president John Collins said its too early to say how much cash the league and NHLPA will generate. We are not at the finish line yet on the WC, Collins wrote in an email. More meetings still needed with PA and federations. Premature to comment on any specifics. NHLPA spokesman Jon Weatherdon declined to comment. The NHL and NHLPA will hold an auction for the 17-game tournaments TV rights. In Canada, that means TSN, Sportsnet and CBC are all expected to bid for the property. Its a gamble to spend so much on a tournament like the World Cup when theres no guarantee Team Canada will advance beyond the round robin portion. But if it does, there could be a big payoff in TV ratings. The final of the World Cup will be a best-of-three format, TSN has learned. Besides TV rights, the NHL and NHLPA will also sell sponsorship rights to the World Cup. They anticipate selling to eight premier corporate sponsors and negotiating deals of at least $1.5 million in each category, a source told TSN. Its a great time of year for them to hold it, said Andy Harkness, a senior vice president with sports marketing firm SDI Marketing. Itll have the best teams in the world, going into the busy selling season. Then theres the fact its on Canadian soil and in the right time zones for advertisers. Harkness said it his clients wouldnt be put off by the possibility that Canada flames out and does not advance beyond the round-robin portion of the tournament. It doesnt matter, Harkness said. All the value in this happens before. Kraft and Pepsi will be going into retailers six weeks before the tournament, explaining this is destination TV and a great marketing opportunity. Theres going to be great hype around this. Hype, however, doesnt translate to newfound cash. Many advertisers will already be committed to buying ads during the TV coverage of the Summer Olympics in Rio in 2016. With the NHL, NBA and NFL seasons also getting underway in the fall, its unclear how many companies will commit new ad dollars to hockeys World Cup. There would be significant interest, but theres no new money out there waiting for this, said Fred Forster, chief executive of media planning agency Omnicom Media Group Canada. Rio will probably suck a lot out of the market, but its also a different market youre going after than with hockey. At least some of the spending at World Cup would be re-purposed money. Some of it will come out of NHL regular season advertising. Canadas largest advertisers include the federal government, which spends $150 million a year, and Procter and Gamble, which spends $130 million. Forster said its unlikely theyd boost their ad spend for the World Cup alone. The NHL and NHLPA will also garner revenue from ticket and merchandise sales. However, its expected that the NHL and the Players Association will have to pay Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment at least $5 million for hosting the three-week tournament. While executives with the Montreal Canadiens wanted to host some of the World Cup games at the Bell Centre, the NHL and its players union decided to host all of the games in Toronto. That way, if the tournament is a success, they could auction off the rights to host the games in 2019, perhaps, to the city that offers the best revenue guarantee — be it Montreal, New York, Stockholm, Moscow, or another city. To be sure, there are still many unanswered questions about how much profit the NHL and players union will generate from the World Cup. They need to pay for insurance for all of the players. Typically, the NHL and the Players Association buy premiums that offer better coverage than simply career-ending policies. Payouts are rare, but they do happen. The Islanders John Tavares, for instance, was covered by an insurance policy when he was injured during the Winter Olympics earlier this year in Sochi, Russia. The Islanders were compensated by an insurance company for the time he missed. Its unclear how much insurance will cost the NHL and NHLPA. Then Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson said last August that it would cost at least $1 million simply to pay for insurance for the 47 Canadian players invited to Team Canada workouts in advance of the Winter Olympics. Anything else is silly. What else are you playing for if thats not the goal. The Cardinals repeated as NL Central champions and made it to the post-season for the 11th time in 15 years by overcoming a sputtering offence and injuries to Yadier Molina, Michael Wacha and Jaime Garcia. PHOENIX -- Yovani Gallardo has always pitched well against Arizona. Home, away, doesnt matter. He has the Diamondbacks number. Gallardo outpitched Chase Anderson in seven strong innings to remain undefeated against Arizona, lifting the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-1 win over the Diamondbacks on Thursday. "Sometimes you look at it as how this game is," Gallardo said of his track record against Arizona. "There are certain things like that I wish I could explain, but I just cant." A day after losing to Arizona on a walkoff hit, the Brewers beat the Diamondbacks for the third time in four games behind Gallardo (5-4). The right-hander entered the game with a 1.93 ERA against the Diamondbacks and lowered it by holding them to a run over seven innings. He improved to 7-0 in 10 career starts against Arizona and earned his 86th career win, tying Ben Sheets for fifth on Milwaukees all-time list. "Weve had him on the ropes several times, but his somehow wriggles out of it, but today he just kind of dominated us," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said of Gallardo. "There wasnt a lot of opportunities out there for us and when we had the opportunities we didnt do anything with them." Milwaukees Carlos Gomez had a run-scoring single in the eighth inning to extend his career high-hitting streak to 15 games and reached base for the 32nd straight game, the majors longest active streak. Francisco Rodriguez worked around a hit in the ninth inning for his majors-leading 23rd save this season and 327th career, moving past Roberto Hernandez for 14th all-time. Gallardo did most of the heavy lifting. Coming off two solid starts, he retired the first 10 batters he faced until Chris Owings blooped a single to right in the fourth inning. Owings reached third, but Gallardo stranded him there. The Diamondbacks had two hits to start the fifth inning and scored a run on Didi Gregorius grounder, but that was it off Gallardo. He alloweed five hits and struck out four, improving to 5-0 in six career starts at Chase Field.dddddddddddd. "He gets to where hes throwing a lot of strikes and you know hes going his rhythm going then," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. Anderson (5-2) wasnt bad, either. He had a superb start to his major league career, becoming the first Diamondbacks rookie to win his first five starts. Even though he pitched well, his run came to an end in his last start, when he allowed two runs on four hits in five innings of a 4-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The right-hander was good again against the Brewers, holding them without a hit until Aramis Ramirez led off the fifth inning with a double. Lyle Overbay followed with a run-scoring double and Elian Herrera added an RBI single to put Milwaukee up 2-0. Ramirez made it 3-1 with a run-scoring single in the sixth after Jean Segura wound up on second with an infield single and a throwing error by Anderson. Anderson allowed two earned runs on five hits and struck out five in six innings. Hes allowed two earned runs or less in six of seven starts. "That was one of the better days Ive felt out there," Anderson said. "A couple of bloop hits, but limited the damage and felt good." Gomez struck out three times before hitting a run-scoring single in the eighth off Matt Stites, who made his major league debut. It didnt matter one bit on Monday night. The Canadian left-hander threw a two-hitter in his second career start and the Minnesota Twins backed him with a pair of home runs in a 3-0 victory over Danny Salazar and the Cleveland Indians. Salazar is the prized prospect with the exploding fastball and knee-buckling changeup that has been blowing hitters away ever since the 23-year-old joined the organization. Albers is a soft-tossing, 27-year-old from North Battleford, Sask., who never met a radar gun that didnt snicker at his 86-mph heat. The matchup sure was lopsided -- for Albers. Albers (2-0) allowed two singles, struck out two and walked none. Hes thrown 17 1-3 straight scoreless innings in a start to his career that grows more improbable each time he takes the mound. "Im not a prototypical prospect," said Albers, who had Tommy John surgery in 2009, was released by the Padres and was playing independent ball in Quebec in 2010. "Im not a guy that goes out there and lights up a radar gun or throws devastating secondary stuff. But I can pitch a little bit and so far Ive been having a little bit of success." Brian Dozier and Trevor Plouffe homered to help the Twins win for the eighth time in 11 games. Salazar (1-1) gave up three runs and three hits, struck out five and walked three in four innings. The slumping Indians have lost seven of eight and are in danger of sliding out of the playoff chase. Jason Kipnis and Yan Gomes had the only hits for Cleveland. "He doesnt miss very many spots, and thats the key," Clevelands Michael Brantley said. "He kept us off balance. He threw the ball well tonight." Albers finally was called up to start in Kansas City on Aug. 6 and threw 8 1-3 scoreless innings. Mixing a fastball that topped out at 88 with a slow curveball that grazed 67, he flustered the Cleveland hitters all night and outshined the overpowering Salazar. "Its pretty unbelievable," Albers said. "I didnt think it could get aany better than the last start.ddddddddddddNow here we are and it did. It got a little bit better." The 23-year-old Salazar blazed through Clevelands minor league system, striking out 129 in 21 outings. That didnt stop when he got called up. A fastball in the high 90s, a superb changeup and the benefit of facing hitters who have never seen him before helped him rack up 17 strikeouts and only two walks in his first two starts. The velocity was there in start No. 3, but the command wasnt. Dozier hit Salazars second pitch of the game out of the park and Plouffe hit a 96-mph fastball out for a two-run homer in the second. Just when Salazar appeared to be settling in, he walked the bases loaded with one out in the fourth. He was able to wiggle out of the jam without allowing any runs, but with so much on the line for the Indians as September approaches, manager Terry Francona didnt leave him out there. Albers was ahead 0-2 on 10 of the first 20 batters he faced. He had a perfect game going until Kipnis blooped a soft single to centre field with two outs in the fourth and got some help from some spectacular defence along the way. Dozier laid out and hauled in a pop fly over his shoulder to get Carlos Santana in the fifth and shortstop Pedro Florimon made a brilliant sliding stop of a grounder up the middle in the seventh, then threw out Nick Swisher from his knees. "We saw how pitching is supposed to be done," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. NOTES: The Twins have scored their last 22 runs off home runs. ... The Indians placed INF Mark Reynolds on release waivers. ... Francona said LHP Scott Kazmir "is doing really well" after saying he had a "dead arm" in his previous start. Mark Buehrle set the tone to what has been a dominating start to the season with a near-shutout victory over Tampa Bay back in early April. The veteran will now shoot for his Major League-leading ninth victory of the campaign against the club as the Toronto Blue Jays play the middle contest of a three-game set on Tuesday night versus the Rays. Buehrle went 12-10 in 33 starts with the Blue Jays last season, posting a 4.15 earned run average in his first season with the franchise. However, he has appeared more comfortable in 2014, going 8-1 through 10 starts with a 2.16 ERA. He has not allowed more than two runs in nine of those outings and at 35 years of age is the oldest pitcher to win at least eight of his first 10 starts since both Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling went 8-1 in 2002 with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Buehrles season began with a victory over Tampa Bay on April 2, when he struck out a season-high 11 batters over 8 2/3 scoreless innings. That improved the hurler to 9-5 with a 4.21 ERA in 23 career meetings with the Rays, 18 of those starts. The left-handed Buehrle has won four straight decisions since suffering his only loss of the season on April 25 versus Boston. He got revenge for that setback last time out on Thursday, limiting the Red Sox to a pair of runs over seven frames of a 7-2 win. In the process, he became baseballs first eight-game winner and only St. Louis Adam Wainwright has been able to join him since. "Its nice, obviously," Buehrle said. "I try to throw it out the window and get ready for my next start." Buehrle should have some room to work with tonight if the Blue Jays can continue their hot hitting. Toronto went deep three times in Mondays 10-5 series-opening win, giving the club a homer in nine straight games and an MLB- high 73 home runs on the season. Edwin Encarnacion hit a solo homer versus the Rays and has hit nine homers over his last 11 games. He has also gone deep 13 times in May, breaking Jose Bautistas 2010 club record for most homers in the month. Dioner Navarro and Steve Tolleson hit consecutive home runs in the fourth inning in Torontos seventh straight victory and 10th in its past 11 games. That bailed out starter Drew Hutchison, who got the win despite giving up five runs over five innings. "Nothing was good, nothing was sharp," Hutchison said. The Rays had a four-game winning streak snapped despite getting home runs from Desmond Jennings, James Loney and David DeJesus as starter Erik Bedard yielded eight runs and 13 hits in four-plus frames. "They just put the heavy gloves on and beat us up tonight," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. That kind of output could be enough to win tonight given Alex Cobbs current 21 2/3 scoreless-innings streak he carries into this start. That run is the third-longest in team history, behind Matt Moores 22 1/3-inning stretch last season and James Shields club-record mark of 23 consecutive innings set in 2011. Cobb has not allowed a run since giving up four over five innings of a loss to Toronto on April 1 in his first start of the season, dropping to 2-1 lifetime with a 2.95 ERA versus Toronto. The 26-year-old followed up that loss to the Blue Jays with consecutive scoreless outings before a trip to the disabled list caused by a left oblique strain. He returned to action for the first time in nearly six weeks on Thursday and shut out Oakland over 6 2/3 innings, scattering three hits and two walks while fanning six in a no-decision. "He was outstanding," said Maddon of Cobb, who is 1-1 with a 1.40 ERA on the year. "Having been off as long as he had, you saw the stuff, the strike throwing, the competitive nature." The Blue Jays have won three of five versus the Rays this season. Al Wood Jersey . Browns advice worked. The $145.7-million Tim Hortons Field was slated to open this month, a year before it was to host all 32 mens and womens soccer competitions. The delay has forced the Hamilton Tiger-Cats football team to use a smaller facility for the first two home games of the season. "I havent heard from the Tiger-Cats about the Tiger-Cats making an announcement. At the end of the day its the same sort of thing like here," said CFL commissioner Mark Cohon from Ottawa prior to the Redblacks home opener. "Look at whats going to be here at the end of the day. Look at whats going to be in Hamilton at the end of the day: A world-class facility thats going to be not just for the next generation of fans but the next generation after that. People are going to be blown away by that facility when its ready as well. Its taking a little bit of time but people are going to be really happy with it when its done." Completion dates for the Toronto track and field centre, a facility in Markham, the equestrian park in Caledon and the shooting centre in Cookstown have all been pushed back by a month or two. The ballpark in Ajax was supposed to be completed by July, but phase two of the project is now expected to be finished in November. However, all the venues are expected to be ready well before the Games begin next July. "We had a significantly difficult winter this past go-around, and I think you would understand the ball park being a challenge when youre trying to put a playing field in when youve got frozen ground," Murray Noble, TO2015s senior vice-president of infrastructure, said Friday. "So some of those projects were truly to do with the weather." The final phase of the Caledon equestrian park was pushed back from December 2014 to February 2015 to make it easier for the right contractors to bid on it, he added. "All of our projects continue to be tracking very well for completion before the end of the year here, and certainly well within the time frames before the Games," he said. Noble said he couldnt provide an exact date for the completion of the Hamilton stadium, saying the question should be directed to Infrastructure Ontario. Infrastructure Ontario says it aims to hold a meeting at the end of the month to evaluate the status of stadium construction, which is currently more than 85 per cent complete. Ontarios governing Liberals have been under fire for the stadium setback, but say taxpayers wont be on the hook for any cost overruns. But the Ticats are taking a financial hit for every game they cant play in the new stadium, said New Democrat Paul Miller, who represents a Hamilton riding. The team will have to use Ron Joyce Stadium at McMaster University, which has 6,000 permanent seats and temporary seating for another 6,000. Tim Hortons Field would have 22,500 permanent seats and a potential capacity of 40,000 through temporary seating. The province gave Hamilton $22.5 million for the stadium, which isnt part of the Pan Am budget. "Whos going to cover that cost?" said Miller. "The citty of Hamilton? Infrastructure Ontario? The Pan Am committee?" TO2015 CEO Saad Rafi said questions about whether there would be any compensation for the Ticats would best be answered by Infrastructure Ontario.ddddddddddddThe Crown corporation wasnt immediately available for comment. "Somebodys going to have to compensate them and at the end of the day, I think we all know that its going to be the taxpayers that are on the hook for this," said Progressive Conservative Todd Smith. Bad weather should be factored into such big projects, he said. The government should just admit publicly that preparations for the Games wont be finished on time or on budget. But TO2015 said that the overall capital building program for the Games is still in line with their budget. It spent $92.8 million in the quarter ending March 31, including $66 million on venue construction during the three months ending March 31, the organizing committee said Friday in its fourth-quarter financial report. Venue construction spending is $387 million so far, about 53 per cent of the total original capital budget of $730 million, it said. It includes $83.5 million for the Hamilton stadium, $148.4 million for an aquatics and field house and $24.8 million on an athletics stadium in Toronto and $53.9 million for the Markham centre, which will host badminton, table tennis and water polo competitions. Operating expenses during the quarter were $26.8 million, mostly spent in the areas of corporate, technology, transportation, events and ceremonies and community and cultural affairs, it said. Corporations have also put in an "incremental $43 million in value" worth of in-kind sponsorships for delivery of the Games, the committee said. TO2015 said it has spent $126.9 million to date, about 15.7 per cent of its total operations budget of $810 million. It reported $4,159 in travel and hospitality expenses for the quarter, bringing the total since last July to $23,136. Rafi said the Games are expected to create 26,000 job and 84 per cent of the funding spent to procure goods and services has gone to Canadian companies. The Games will take place at 34 different competition venues across the Golden Horseshoe, from Niagara in the south to Orillia in the north, running from July 7 to 26, followed by the Parapan Am Games Aug. 7 to 15. The Liberals have also been criticized for the cost of security for the Games, admitting that the original $113 million built into the Pan Am budget was just a best guess and it may climb above the latest estimate of $239 million. TO2015 said it couldnt provide the latest figures, saying it was in the hands of the Pan/Parapan Am Games Integrated Security Unit. The report glosses over the construction delays, inflates the number of jobs that will be created and doesnt mention the amount of money that will be spent on security or transportation, Miller said. "Every time (the Liberals) talk about it, they talk about the positive side of it," Miller said. "And thats fine, but they dont talk about the hidden negative side and they dont want the public to know that." The total budget for the Games, including security, transportation and the athletes village is currently estimated at $2.5 billion. ' ' '
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Although Paul Maurice declines the credit, the Winnipeg Jets still havent lost since he stepped behind their bench. Theyre even good enough to beat a team that had been practically perfect on home ice all season long. Ondrej Pavelec made 40 saves, Evander Kane had a short-handed goal and an assist in his return from injury, and the Jets ended the Anaheim Ducks 10-game home winning streak with a 3-2 victory Tuesday night. Blake Wheeler and captain Andrew Ladd also scored for the last-place Jets, who handed the overall NHL leaders their first regulation loss at home this season after a 20-0-2 start at Honda Center. Bryan Little had two assists as Winnipeg hung on for its fourth consecutive win since Maurice replaced Claude Noel, culminating in this gritty win in the leagues most daunting road arena. "Its a tough building to play in, and it feels good to be the first team to beat them (here) this season," Pavelec said. "Its only two points, but it feels really good, especially in this building. ... The whole team is playing with confidence. The new coach let us know were good players, and we can beat anybody." With a fourth win for Maurice, Winnipeg even relinquished sole possession of last place in the Central Division, pulling even with Nashville at the bottom of the table. Yet when asked what hes done to this underachieving group, the veteran coach is frank: "Nothing." "Before I got here, I thought this was a good hockey team," Maurice added. "Now were feeling good, and that changes everything." Cam Fowler and Nick Bonino scored for the NHL-leading Ducks, who hadnt lost at home since Dec. 3. Anaheim has won 19 of 22 overall, but has lost two of its last three games despite putting 42 shots on net and having 36 more potential shots blocked by the Jets. Anaheim was just the fourth NHL team in 40 years to earn a point in its first 22 home games to start a season. The Ducks were the only NHL team that hadnt lost in regulation at home this season, but they began the week leading up to Saturdays game at Dodger Stadium by overlooking the Jets for two mediocre periods. "Theres a lot of distractions going on this week with this outdoor game," Anaheim captain Ryan Getzlaf said. "Everybody wants to talk about it, and everyones been talking about it for two weeks, so its hard to focus in on what you need to do and getting the two points on hand. But thats no excuse." Anaheim faces the Los Angeles Kings at home on Thursday and again in Chavez Ravine on the weekend. Jonas Hiller yielded three goals on 11 shots and was pulled late in the second period of his second straight loss after a 14-game winning streak. The Swiss Olympic goalie candidly acknowledged a lack of focus. "I just didnt feel like I was really in the game and I wasnt able to cut out all the distractions, like the outdoor game," Hiller said. "Those things happen, but its too bad in this situation. We wanted to keep that streak going. Some days you feel better and other days you dont. You cant be perfect every night. The problem with a goalie is, you see right away if you dont feel good, and you cant really hide." Frederik Andersen stopped 10 shots in relief during the Ducks return from a road trip that began with a loss in Chicago, snapping their eight-game winning streak. Fowler scored a goal in his second straight game just 3:59 in, ripping a slap shot off Zach Bogosians stick on a power play. But Wheeler evened it moments later, putting a stoppable shot past Hillers glove for his 18th goal, and Ladd scored late in the period by pouncing on a loose puck. Anaheim struggled on two power plays in the second period, and Hiller got yanked when he fanned on a quick shot by Kane, who had been out since Jan. 7 after hurting his hand in a fight. After Andersen relieved Hiller, the Ducks pressed in the third period and finally scored when Bonino followed Jakob Silfverbergs rebound in the slot and scored his 16th goal. "You hate to lose," Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau said. "You want this thing to go on forever." NOTES: The erstwhile Atlanta Thrashers hadnt visited Honda Center since Oct. 15, 2010. DETROIT -- James Shields was acquired two offseasons ago to pitch in games like this for Kansas City. With the Royals trying to avoid a sweep in their biggest series in years, the 32-year-old right-hander delivered. "You dont earn a nickname like Big Game James for nothing," manager Ned Yost said. "Games dont come much bigger than this." Shields allowed two hits over seven innings in another terrific performance, and Kansas City edged Detroit 3-0 on Wednesday night to take a one-game lead over the Tigers atop the AL Central. Detroit had won the first two games of the series to pull into a virtual tie for first in the division. The teams have a three-game series in Kansas City that starts Sept. 19. "Its definitely a game that we needed, for sure, but I think every game from here on out is pretty crucial," Shields said. "We took a couple tough losses there, the last couple days, but were having fun right now and enjoying the moment." Shields (14-7) gave up a single to Ian Kinsler leading off the first. Then he picked off Kinsler -- and retired every other batter he faced until another Detroit single in the seventh. The Tigers put two on that inning, but Shields worked out of the jam. Kelvin Herrera pitched the eighth and Wade Davis finished for his third save. Rick Porcello (15-11) pitched well for the Tigers, but Kansas City pushed across two runs in the fourth on RBI singles by Salvador Perez and Lorenzo Cain. Alcides Escobar added a sacrifice fly in the ninth. Shields was acquired in December 2012 in a trade that sent top prospect Wil Myers to Tampa Bay. Myers won Rookie of the Year honours last season, but now Shields has helped put the Royals in contention for their first post-season appearance since 1985. "The only thing Ive been telling guys is just stay relaxed and have fun," said Shields, who pitched in the post-season for Tampa Bay in 2008, 2010 and 2011. "This is why we play the game." He came within two outs of a shutout in New York on Friday in a 1-0 win over the Yankees, and the Tigers didnt fare any better against him. SShields struck out eight and walked one on Wednesday, throwing 98 pitches.dddddddddddd Torii Hunters comebacker hit Shields in the back of his right leg in the first, but the Kansas City starter was able to continue. The game was delayed 42 minutes by rain at the start, and in the fourth it was raining hard enough to send fans toward the concourse, but there were no more delays. RALLY HALTED In the seventh, Hunter managed a single and Miguel Cabrera walked, but Shields retired Victor Martinez on a deep fly and struck out J.D. Martinez. "Thats pretty typical of him. He goes out and he pitches like that for 200 innings every year. Thats what he does," Kinsler said. "Rick threw the ball really well, but we didnt create any offence, and thats the game." TOUGH LOSS Porcello struck out four of the first five Kansas City batters. He allowed two runs and seven hits in 6 2-3 innings, striking out seven without a walk. He allowed consecutive singles to Josh Willingham, Eric Hosmer and Perez with one out in the fourth, and Cains two-out single made it 2-0. TRAINERS ROOM Royals: All-Star closer Greg Holland sat out again, despite the tight score in the late innings. He hasnt pitched since Sept. 3 because of a triceps issue. "Greg felt fine today," Yost said. "My whole mindset was, I was going to go up to the point where Greg said, OK, I dont feel anything -- and then give him another day." Tigers: RHP Joakim Soria (left oblique strain) was activated from the disabled list before the game. He allowed a run in the ninth. ... Left-handed reliever Phil Coke left in the eighth with a muscle spasm in his lower back after being unable to field Hosmers bunt. UP NEXT Royals: RHP Liam Hendriks (1-1) starts against Bostons Clay Buchholz (7-8) on Thursday night. Kansas City LHP Danny Duffy is missing that turn in the rotation because of a sore shoulder. In the midst of the collapse, the goaltender and his head coach had conflicting statements following a tough loss to the Red Wings in which Reimer allowed three goals on 34 shots. “I thought he was okay, you know, just okay,” Carlyle said post-game, to which Reimer replied: “He said just okay? ROME -- Canadian Daniel Nestor and Serbian partner Nenad Zimonjic reached the doubles final of the Italian Open on Saturday as they beat top-seeded Bob and Mike Bryan for the second week in a row, advancing 7-6 (3), 4-6, 12-10. The sixth-seeded pair, who beat the Americans last week in the Madrid Masters final, needed one hour 39 minutes to complete the semifinal victory at the Foro Italico. "Today we were fortunate," said Nestor. "It was a tight match with both teams playing well. We both had chances but we found a way to win today. "It seems that against the Bryans right now, we can play our best against them when we have to." Nestor and Zimonjic will play an unseeded duo on Sunday. Robin Haase of the Netherlands and Spains Feliciano Lopez were to play Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov and Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic in the late semifinal. Either way, it will be a first career meeting for the veteran duo of Nestor and Zimonjic. "Both teams are very dangerous, and weve struggled against teams we dont know much about," said Nestor. "We need to come to the court ready to play every point and not be satisfied with whats been going on for the last few weeks. "Our goal is to play well. If they are too good, well they are too good. If not, then we win a second title in a row." In the match tiebreak, Nestor and Zimonjic took a 6-3 lead only to give up three straight points. The Bryans blew a match point before Nestors team claimed victory on their second match point. The Canadian and his partner have won 26 titles as a team, including victories at Sydney and Madrid this season. They lost finals in Dubai and Barcelona. Nestor also won the Brisbane title alongside Mariusz Fyrstenberg of Poland in the opening week of the season. BROOKLYN - The Toronto Raptors will try to capture their first best-of-seven series in franchise history and advance into the second round of the 2013-14 NBA Playoffs this evening when they face the Brooklyn Nets in Game 6 at Barclays Center. Tom Chambers Jersey . You can watch live coverage now on TSN, TSN GO and TSN Radio 1050. Also, TSN.ca will feature live streaming of the fan festivities at Maple Leaf Square and the post-game news conferences. The only time the Raptors advanced in the postseason came in 2001 when they defeated the New York Knicks, 3-2. They fell to the Philadelphia 76ers in seven games in the Eastern Conference semifinals that year, but since have failed to get out of the first round the three other times they made the playoffs. "I think we understand the intensity, weve learned that," Raptors coach Dwane Casey said after practice on Thursday. "Its hard in this league because so much is on the line. Were a young team. Its a positive for these guys to go through this." The Raptors took the series lead with a 115-113 home win on Wednesday. Any win is important, but Toronto watched a 26-point lead evaporate before finally securing the victory. "We did everything wrong you could think of in the fourth quarter," Casey said. "This was a learning experience." The Nets appeared ready to pack it in as they began the fourth quarter in a 91-69 hole and had Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett watching from the bench. Somehow, the combination of Joe Johnson, Deron Williams and an unproven bench totaled 44 points over the final 12 minutes to make things very interesting. Mirza Teletovic opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer and converted a three-point play on the ensuing possession to jump-start a 19-3 run that trimmed the Nets deficit to 97-91. Johnson knocked down an open 3-pointer with 3:19 left to pull even at 101-101, and it was knotted at 106-106 prior to a huge 3-pointer from Torontos Kyle Lowry. Two DeMar DeRozan free throws stretched the margin to 113-108, though Alan Andersons second four-point play of the quarter gave the Nets hope inside 10 seconds to play. After DeRozan sank two clutch free throws for a three-point game, the Raptors fouled Andray Blatche, who made his first free throw and grabbed his own rebound after intentionally missing the second. Blatches pass back to the top of the key, however, went over Williams head and into the backcourt for a violation, and the Raptors barely hung on for the win. "Hopefully, this put us on high alert," said Casey. Lowry led the way with 36 points behind six 3-pointers, including the gigantic go-ahead one with 1:04 remaining. DeRozan added 23 points and Jonas Valanciunas chipped in with 16 for Toronto, Johnson paced Brooklyn with 30 points, Teletovic added 17 off the bench while Williams and Anderson each netted 13 in the setback. "The guys fought," Nets head coach Jason Kidd said. "They put us in a position to win on the road, but we didnt do the little things." If the Nets can force Game 7, it will be on Sunday at the Air Canada Centre. If Toronto prevails on Friday, the Raptors will meet the Miami Heat in the second round. Steelers-Browns. Cowboys vs. anybody in the NFC East. Those are long-standing NFL rivalries. Add to them 49ers-Seahawks, with a history of nastiness emanating from the college ranks for their coaches, and a hefty animosity built up in annual doubleheaders in their division. Now they meet for a spot in the Super Bowl. Are those hard feelings for real? "I think so, but itll always be that way when you have two good teams in the same division," 49ers receiver Anquan Boldin said. "You play each other a couple times a year and if youre good enough, possibly three times a year. It was the same way when I was in Baltimore playing against Pittsburgh. You respect each other as foes, but there is really a dislike." Its a healthy thing, really, because it makes for even more uncompromising action — on the field and on the sideline. One of these teams will emerge Sunday from ear-splitting CenturyLink Field headed for New Jersey to play for the sports biggest prize. The other will carry into the off-season even more loathing for this opponent. "There is no love lost; there is no love found," said Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, who will find himself lined up often against Boldin in the NFC championship game. "Its going to be intense. Its going to be physical. I dont know if there are going to be handshakes after this one." That almost goes without saying with the coaches. When 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh was at Stanford — where, incidentally, Sherman played after being recruited by current Seahawks coach Pete Carroll when he was at Southern California — he ran up the score in a 2009 win at Los Angeles that prompted Carroll to ask him at games end: "Whats your deal." Harbaughs deal has always revolved around being a hard-edged player and coach. His teams embody that attitude, and it certainly has worked in San Francisco. The 49ers are 41-13-1 in his three seasons in charge, are in their third straight conference title game, and back down from no one. That can make for some uncomfortable moments, whether its Harbaughs overzealous handshakes and back slaps after wins or his team playing up to (and sometimes beyond) the whistle. Carroll claims the acrimony between them is overblown. "For whatever reasons, you guys have had a field day with this," Carroll told reporters Thursday.. Shaquille ONeal Jersey. "We have not been friends over the year, we just know each other through the games. We have a very confined relationship. "I have great respect for Jim. Thats it — you guys have had a blast with it." Carrolls Seahawks arent exactly wallflowers, either. Defensively, at least, these are the NFLs two most physical and intimidating units. That, in turn, can lead to ill will. "I dont hate anybody," All-Pro cornerback Sherman said. "So I dont think (theres) hate. But passion, definitely. There will be some passion, some dislike — some strong dislike. But there will be some intensity. Its playoff football. "So even if we werent two teams that are familiar with each other ... theres going to be a lot of intensity, a lot of chippiness, and a hard-fought game." Where might this antipathy show most? Try whenever Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch — his nickname, "Beast Mode," says it all about his style of play — meets up with All-Pro NaVorro Bowman and his fellow linebackers, the best group in the NFL. Or when Boldin, among the best clutch receivers in football, uses his physicality against Sherman, safety Earl Thomas, a fellow All-Pro, and the rest of the games top secondary. All of the matchups for Sunday are familiar to both sides, of course. And when division foes meet for the conference title — each team won at home this season — the results hardly are predictable. Since the 1970 merger, there have been 15 third meetings in conference championships, 10 in the AFC, including the Seahawks losing to Oakland when Seattle was an AFC franchise in 1983. The 49ers beat the Rams in such a meeting in 1989. In 10 of those games, the host won. What can be forecast for Sunday: hard feelings all around, even if 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis tones it down slightly. "Theres no question theres a lot of hostility between us," Willis said, "but at the end of the day theyre another football team. So, theres always going to be dislikes. Theyre an opponent of ours and we want to win. "If we werent in this race right now thered be no doubt that if they were playing against someone else, I would wish them well because its in our division. But its us playing, so theres not going to be any like at all there." ___ AP NFL website: http://www.pro32.ap.org ' ' '

And this is not just any birthday. Today, the Calgarian turns the big Five-Oh. So is the four-time winner on the PGA Tour happy about his big day? "Hell no. Its 50! Who wants to get there?" Ames chuckled in mock protest. "Actually, Im OK with it - its just a number." But its a big number, one that makes him eligible for the Champions Tour, that career mulligan circuit for the older set. He will make his official debut as an Old Guy on May 22 at the Senior PGA Championship, one of that tours five majors. "I look at it as being fortunate," Ames said, "because I have another place to play. Someone referred to it the other day as the back nine of my career. For me, it means I have 15 more years of golf and having fun with it and not having to worry about a job or a pay cheque coming in. Im pretty much set - its nice." Ames is ready to compete on the Champions Tour and thinks he can play well. Compared to many of the older guys, hes in great shape. His back problems that troubled him years ago havent been an issue for some time and in preparation for his move to the 50-and-over tour, hes lost 11 pounds. "Ive been working out hard," he said, "doing some hard cardio. Its not about weights for me, its cardio and all of a sudden the weight started dropping off. I was a size 35 pant and now Im slipping into 32s." Ames, who is being inducted into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame later this year, has also been working hard on his game, adding some distance to his drives and concentrating on his scoring clubs. Those will come in handy on a tour where the courses are 7,000 yards as opposed to the 7,500 hes been playing. "I expect to play well," he stated. "The only difference is that instead of hitting 3-irons into greens, Ill be hitting 9-irons." After years of working with Sean Foley, Ames parted ways with the guy he brought to the PGA Tour last year. The two remain ffriendly but Ames found it hard to get time on Foleys busy schedule. Air Max 97 London Summer Of Love. So hes been seeing Calgary swing coach Paul Horton, and is happy with the new relationship. "The changes Im making, Im understanding them and Im starting to hit it further, which is a bit scary," he said. "The hard thing were struggling with right now is keeping it on the golf course. Thats just because Im not quite secure with it yet. But overall, Im definitely seeing the difference. Im not as short as the numbers are saying right now." In addition to less mileage on the scorecard, Ames is also looking forward to the more relaxed atmosphere on the Champions Tour, which he says will fit his personality. Its definitely a fan-friendly circuit and the out-going Ames believes hell enjoy that part of it, something thats been missing from the current PGA Tour. "Im going to get to be me a little more," he said. "The guys out here [on the PGA Tour] as so serious and stern-faced and there are no smiles... Im still enjoying it out here but its tougher and so thats why Im really looking forward to the Champions Tour." Ames will spend this year going back and forth between the two tours, playing 20 on the PGA Tour and filling in the rest of the season on the Champions Tour. For the first time in his career, hell also get a home game, teeing it up in the Shaw Charity Classic, the stop in Calgary. Sleeping in his own bed while playing a tournament is something hes never done, but hes looking forward to helping the tournament become even more successful than its maiden run last year. As he did on the PGA Tour, Ames will take to the Champions Tour in his own way. On the course, he should be a contender with that silky smooth swing of his. Off it, he will be the same guy too -- he never worries much about what others think and hes not afraid to say whats on his mind. Thats refreshing. Stephen Ames leads a stress-free life and thats a good way to be. ' ' '
