PITTSFORD, N. Vapormax Plus Clearance .Y. -- It had been so long that Brittany Lincicome didnt quite know what to think about her spot atop the LPGA Championship leaderboard. Lincicome opened a three-stroke lead Friday in the wind-swept tournament, the LPGA Tours fourth major championship of the season, as Americans moved into position for their fourth straight major victory of the year. "I feel like Ive been doing a lot of really good things," Lincicome said. "I feel like Ive been playing really well, driving it far, which is awesome. But its just not coming together." It has at Monroe Golf Club. The long-hitting Lincicome followed her opening 67 with a 68 to reach 9 under as she chases her first title since 2011. She won the 2009 Kraft Nabisco for her lone major title and has five LPGA Tour victories. Lexi Thompson, tied for the first-round lead with Meena Lee, dropped into a tie for second with defending champion Inbee Park of South Korea. Thompson had a 72, and Park shot 66. That gave the United States two players at the top with majors already on the trophy shelf. "Its a great leaderboard so far," said Thompson, who won the Kraft Nabisco to start the major run. "Today was a little more difficult than yesterday. Just didnt hit it as well, but I did make some good putts, so Im going to take a positive out of it." Its the first time Americans have won the first three majors since 1999, and they havent won four since 1992. Michelle Wie won the U.S. Womens Open, and Mo Martin surged to victory in the final round at the Womens British Open. A fifth major, the Evian Championship in France, was added last year. Seventeen-year-old Lydia Ko of New Zealand had a 69 to join Lee, from South Korea, and Jane Park at 5 under. Lee had a 73, and Park shot 69. Top-ranked Stacy Lewis sputtered again with a 1-over 73 to finish the two rounds at even par. Jennifer Kirby (79), from Paris, Ont., dropped from second in the first round to 54th on Friday at a 2-over par. Lincicome had an eagle and three birdies to go with one bogey for her second solid day. She averaged 277.5 yards off the tee on the two measured holes and needed only 26 putts for the second straight day. "Its been incredible," Lincicome said. "I havent been here in a while, especially in a major." Thompson reached 8 under after a birdie at the par-5 14th hole but followed with bogeys at Nos. 8 and 9 to drop into a tie with Lincicome at the turn. Lincicome, who started the day one shot off the lead, birdied the par-5 12th hole to gain a one-shot advantage while Inbee Park slowly clawed her way back into contention after shooting even par on the first day. Park had two birdies and chipped in from a greenside bunker for an eagle on her first five holes on the back side, and three birdies in the first three holes on the front put her at 6 under. "Quite different from yesterday," said Park, who won three majors last year. "I thought I need to change things a little bit and get a little more aggressive, and thats what I did." Thompsons birdie at No. 3 forged a tie with Lincicome and Meena Lee at 7 under, but it was short-lived. Moments later, Lincicome notched the sixth eagle of the day at the par-5 14th hole to put her two shots ahead and then parred out. Unable to string any sort of run together as she did on the first day, Thompson dropped into a tie for second after a bogey at the par-3 sixth hole, statistically the sixth-most difficult hole on the day. Locust Hill had been LPGAs host in the Rochester area for 37 straight years before the tour made the switch this year to nearby Monroe. The Donald Ross-designed course is about 300 yards longer at 6,717 yards, and the wider fairways favoured long hitters. "Right now, the fairways are generous. You can just bomb it off the tee," said Suzann Pettersen, tied for seventh at 4 under after a 69. "You can risk the extra few yards. Even if you miss it (the fairway), youll still be able to get to the greens somehow." A gusting wind strafed the course all day, sending leaves and bits of bark onto some greens and making each shot an adventure. Pettersen, who averaged over 276 yards off the tee, second-best over the first two rounds, was in the morning group and managed to stay out of trouble for the most part. It wasnt easy. "It is playable out there, but youve got to hit some great golf shots," Pettersen said. "The wind is a bit choppy. Its bounding up and down all the time. Youve got to try and find the pocket, try and hit the right shot that gives you the highest percentage." Ko, already a four-time winner on her LPGA Tour career, hit all 14 fairways and reached 15 greens in regulation in notching six birdies with three bogeys in an up-and-down day. Ko needed 31 putts to complete the round -- six more than the first day -- in part because of a three-putt bogey at No. 2 and then failing to get up-and-down at No. 4 in making another bogey. Both holes are par 4s. "I just give myself as many opportunities as I can," said the low-key Ko, who didnt touch a club during a recent five-day stretch because her swing was "on holiday." "I wish I was a long hitter," Ko said. "Im just trying to play to my strengths." Ko, a two-time winner this season, remained focused on the moment and just shrugged at the possibility of becoming the youngest winner of a major in LPGA Tour history. "I think about winning at the end of the week," Ko said. "Im going to go out there and just have some fun. Theres still two more days. Im pretty confident. Its good to be in this position." New York then missed its next six shots and scored only two points the rest of the night. The Los Angeles Clippers defence and the Knicks general ineptitude both played a role in the unsurprising finish to a meeting of two teams headed in opposite directions. SAN ANTONIO -- Spurs coach Gregg Popovich admitted he is getting antsy for a loss. Hell have to wait. Marco Belinelli scored 18 points and San Antonio never trailed after its opening possession, extending its winning streak to 17 games with a 96-80 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Saturday night. The Spurs once again used fluid passing and tireless player movement to overwhelm an opponent. San Antonio finished with 24 assists while going 37 for 78 from the field in snapping New Orleans five-game winning streak. "They move around a lot, and run their sets hard," Pelicans guard Brian Roberts said. "Whatever theyre running, they are moving constantly. It puts pressure on a defence to play 24 seconds worth." Roberts scored 18 points, Austin Rivers added 16 points, Tyreke Evans had 11 points and Al-Farouq Aminu had eight points and 10 rebounds for New Orleans (32-41). Kawhi Leonard and Manu Ginobili scored 15 points each, Patty Mills added 13 and Tim Duncan had 12 points and eight rebounds. San Antonio (57-16) extended its lead to 3 1/2 games over Oklahoma City (53-19) for the leagues best record. In addition to winning its last 17, the Spurs have won 20 of 21 and have not lost since falling 106-85 to the Phoenix Suns on Feb. 21. "It is sweet to be a part of that," Ginobili said. "It is not something that happens very often because it is a long spread of game, a month or two. Here or there you have a bad game or the opponent has a bad one, but a lot of things have combined for us to have this type of streak. We played really well and we are healthy." New Orleans was without Anthony Davis, its leading scorer and rebounder. Davis injured his left ankle 4 minutes into the Pelicans victory over Utah on Friday night. "Its a joint/soft tissue injury right now," New Orleans coach Monty Williams said. "He did it in his normal routine. Hes listed as day to day. Well see how he feels tomorrow." Williams said the Pelicans would have had a tough task even with Davis and the Spurs showed why early. "They jumped oon us," Evans said. Wholesale Nike Shoes Clearance. "They just moved the ball hit shots and we couldnt make a shot." San Antonio opened the game on a 23-6 run, with Belinelli picked up where he left off Friday night. He was 4 for 5 on 3-pointers against New Orleans after going 6 for 9 on 3-pointers Friday while scoring a game-high 27 points in a 133-102 victory in Denver. "Hes been really steady for us and he plays a great all-around game," Popovich said. Belinelli made his first two 3-pointers against the Pelicans after opening with a 15-foot jumper off an assist from Duncan. Belinellis first 3-pointer with 6 minutes remaining in the first quarter gave San Antonio a 16-4 lead. The Spurs would never lead by less than 10 points the rest of the way. After Alexis Ajinca hit a 17-foot jumper on the games opening possession, New Orleans did not score again until Greg Stiemsmas dunk with 8:21 remaining in the first quarter. The three-minute drought was followed by another three-minute drought. "We couldnt finish in the paint tonight," Williams said. "We were 18 for 48 in the paint. Thats a bad number for us. Were a team that usually is high when it comes to points in the paint." Rivers layup with 30.9 seconds pulled New Orleans within 69-59 with 30.9 seconds left in the third quarter, but Belinelli hit back-to-back 3s to fuel a 12-3 run and San Antonio reasserted its control. San Antonio travels to Indiana to play the Eastern Conference-leading Pacers on Monday. NOTES: Three-time Masters champion Phil Mickelson sat courtside during the game cheering the Spurs. Mickelson withdrew Saturday from the third round of the Valero Texas Open after injuring an oblique muscle. "I pulled a muscle on my downswing trying to hit the ball hard on the second hole (his 11th)," Mickelson said in a statement. "It just killed and it wouldnt subside for 10 or 12 seconds." ... Michael van Gerwen and Gary Anderson meet in Dublin as they battle it out for the World Grand Prix crown, live on Sky Sports 1. Anderson and Van Gerwen last met in a major televised final in the Premier League which Anderson won, coming out on top in 2015 when both men averaged in excess of 105 in a classic.John Part believes we are going to see more of the same on Saturday when the action gets underway from 8.30pm. Anderson books MVG date Report from Friday nights semi-finals The two pearls of the tournament are going to be battling it out - it was an excellent night of darts and Michael is the number one in the world but Gary is the world champ, said Part. I believe it will really be an epic final and I think it will go pretty deep, if not all the way because they will not give in to each other, they just wont. They both looked good, they are ready for each other and there is no surprises - its in front of them what they have to do. We will see the two best players in the tournament by far in a real clash of the titans. Michael van Gerwen came back from 2-1 down to beat Dave Chisnall 4-2 and reach the final of the World Grand Prix Anderson was below par in his quarter-final win over Kim Huybrechts but averaged just under 99 in seeing off Raymond van Barneveld in an impressive semi-final display. Not to be outdone MVG, winner of the UK Open, World Matchplay and Premier League already this year, averaged just under 100 to see off a game Dave Chisnall. The averages underline the quality of Saturdays finalists and while some are overawed by Van Gerwen, Part believes Anderson will rise to the challenge of the facing the world number one.I think that Gary has never been bothered by playing against MVG and he will just get in there and think he has every right to win - MVG will obviously think the same thing, he said. Anderson doesnt have to stop Van Gerwen, he just has to be Gary Anderson and not worry about Michael and just take his chances and I think thats how Gary Anderson becomes the champ.Anderson claimed his second successive world title in January this year but the back-to-back world champion has yet to stamp his mark on the other majors, this will be his first World Grand Prix final and he is yet to win the Matchplay. Anderson sets up MVG final Gary Anderson beats Raymond van Barneveld; Michael van Gerwen sinks Dave Chisnall in World GP But Part believes that will add fuel to the fire - and he is speaking from experience. It means a lot to Gary. I think as an ex-world champion myself I was a little disappointed that I never cracked the Matchplay or the Grand Prix because they are the longest running in the PDC, so I can relate to how I think Gary might really want to take this title, Part added. It is a short turnaround to play a major final of this status in just one day but its good to have them playing equally well and standing up to good performances against them. Gary Anderson beat Raymond van Barneveld 4-1 to reach his first final in Dublin For now, Part is relishing the showdown between the two best players in the game at the moment: It doesnt get much better than the world champion against the world number one. I think MVG might set the pace early but it is hard to say that because Gary can be so explosive. I guess it will come down to the doubling in and who gets away with the 160s more often. They will both be good…really good so it will come down to a missed double here and there and maybe a high out shot here and there but they will be pretty level. You can follow all the action from Saturdays final with our live blog and on Sky Sports 1 from 8.30pm. DETROIT -- Johnny Manziel took off up the middle, slipping between a couple defensive linemen and racing through the open field. Then -- perhaps most importantly -- he finished the 16-yard run with a smooth, feet-first slide across the turf at Ford Field. "The times I did take off, I felt like I got out of bounds, slid, and tried to protect myself in the best way that I could," Manziel said. "I feel fine." Manziel showed off some of his fancy footwork, and the Cleveland rookie looked sharp with his arm too in his preseason debut, although the Browns lost to the Detroit Lions 13-12 on Saturday night. Manziel entered the game as a backup in the middle of the second quarter. He couldnt take his team to the end zone, but he looked poised while directing the offence. One of the biggest questions facing Manziel is how much he can afford to tuck the ball in and run with it. He was quick to scramble Saturday, but he never looked reckless or out of control. "It was a good start," he said. "You have to start somewhere and set a foundation. I got my feet wet, got my first preseason game under my belt." Manziel went 7 of 11 for 63 yards, completing one more pass than starting quarterback Brian Hoyer. Manziel also ran for 27 yards on six carries. Hoyer went 6 of 14 for 92 yards. Coach Mike Pettine said no decision has been made about who will start Clevelands next preseason game. "They both did some things more suited to their skill set," Pettine said. "I think Brian was high on a couple throws. I think he would want those back, and he threw a couple other nice balls in there. Then I thought Johnny did some nice things from the pocket, and when he got out, he created a little bit as well." Matthew Stafford led the Lions to a field goal on his only drive of the game. Star receiver Calvin Johnson didnt play. "Were very multiple in this offence. We have a lot of different looks and a lot of different plays that we can show the opposing defence," Stafford said. "You didnt see a lot of that tonight, because we barely gameplanned for this game at all, so there werent a lot of the things that we will have in the regular season." Cleveland receiver Nate Burleson, who played in Detroit the last four seasons, also sat out this game. Detroits Kellen Moore threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Corey Fuller with 1:05 remaining in the fourth quarter, and Giorgio Tavecchio made the long extra point to give the Lions the one-point win. There was a buzz surrounding this preseason game because of Manziels debut, and the former Heisman Trophy winner took the field with 7:32 remaining in the first half, drawing a few cheers but also plenty of boos from the Detroit crowd. Amid a fair number of camera flashes, Manziel took the snap and immediately completed a 6-yard pass toward the left sideline to Anthony Armstrong. But the Lions stuffed the Cleveland quarterback on what looked like a read option on third down, ending that drive. Billy Cundiff gave Cleveland a 9-6 lead with a 41-yard field goal early in the third quarter. On his next drive, Manziel dropped back on third-and-8, then took off up the middle, finding plenty of open space for a 16-yard run that was the longest by a Cleveland player on the night. "I was coming back across my progression to throw, and it kind of just parted for me. I needed to make a quick decision," Manziel said. "Luckily I got past the first wave of defensive linemen." Manziel later outran the Lions to the sideline to pick up a first down on fourth-and-1, but the drive ended when Dion Lewis fumbled inside the Detroit 30. Cundiff kicked four field goals for the Browns, and rookie Nate Freese made two for the Lions. Detroit was playing its first preseason game under new coach Jim Caldwell, and the offence did little to impress with Stafford barely playing. Backup quarterback Dan Orlovsky went 12 of 23 for 89 yards. Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon played while awaiting word from the NFL on his appeal of a possible suspension for violating the leagues substance-abuse policy. He caught two passes for 32 yards. Rookie tight end Eric Ebron, Detroits first-round draft pick, played after missing some practice time during the week with an injury. He caught one pass. Seth Roberts Jersey . ELKHART LAKE, Wis. -- An accomplished veteran in open-wheel racing, Alex Tagliani probably could find a full-time ride in the IndyCar series if he wanted it badly enough. So whats he doing driving stock cars? Having the time of his life, apparently. "You need to throw some challenges into your life, into your career," Tagliani said. "If not, it gets boring. For me, when I drive a stock car, it doesnt come natural. It takes a lot of control. So when I get out of the car, I feel like I want more. Maybe thats what keeps the spark in you to be in love with what you do." Tagliani, a 40-year-old native of Montreal who made his name in Indy-style racing -- he won the pole position for the 2011 Indianapolis 500 -- is driving two road courses for Team Penske in the NASCAR Nationwide series this season. He dominated much of a rain-soaked race at Road America last weekend, only to run out of gas near the end; he refuelled and made a mad charge to a second-place finish in a green-white-checker overtime. Hell drive again for Penske at Mid-Ohio in August. Beyond that, Tagliani is racing in the relative obscurity of the Canadian Tire series, NASCARs humble attempt to establish a foothold for stock car racing north of the border. Hes also doing some sports car racing. He did drive in the Indianapolis 500 in May, finishing 13th, but he has very little desire to pursue a full-time IndyCar ride at this point in his career. Backing away from IndyCar has largely freed him from the money-fueled politics that frustrated him. "The Indianapolis 500 is a huge event," Tagliani said. "But running an Indy car for a full season, theres a price to pay, and I was not willing to continue to pay that price this year." When Tagliani says theres a price to pay, hes being literal; unlike other sports, where teams draft and sign the best players they can, talent is only one factor in deetermining who gets hired by a particular team in auto racing.dddddddddddd All teams expect a driver to be a good spokesman they can sell to a corporate sponsor -- but some teams take it one step further, actually expecting the driver to come to the table with sponsorship deals already in hand. "Youre actually funding, or helping, a team to survive, and youre helping their business, but theyre not helping you back," Tagliani said. "Youre helping them with your energy and your money and your work, and they use that, and theres always the grass is greener somewhere else, right? Youre never able to build something for the long term. To the point where it frustrates you, and I didnt want to drive frustrated. I just wanted to enjoy driving, you know? "And thats where I am now. Every step you make in your career has some consequences, and Im still glad I did them because I ended up in a Penske car. I cant ask for more." The move to the Canadian Tire series was actually a plus to his main sponsor, the Canadian division of drug manufacturing giant Pfizer. The company wants to promote its EpiPen allergy treatment -- a natural fit for Tagliani, who has a nut allergy -- in Canada. "They wanted a Canadian presence," Tagliani said. "So at some point, you can push and push and push, but theyre going to say you either race more in Canada and you give us a Canadian program, or we cut the money out. So I kind of revamped my program, and made sure it was beneficial to me." Now Tagliani doesnt plan on slowing down anytime soon. "Ill replicate this 2014 season again for the next five," Tagliani said. "Because Im having a lot of fun, Im able to do IndyCar at the speedway, that I like. Im able to please my sponsor in Canada and also race the 22 car for Team Penske and run prototypes when Im free. What else could a driver ask for?" ' ' '

But the Germans dont want to rest on their laurels and again end up waiting 24 years for a World Cup title. The year behind us was extraordinary but it shouldnt be the only one, Niersbach said. We are not going to lean back. Thats why weve set out a 10-year plan. The ambitious long-term project is aimed at making success more permanent. Few would consider Germany a failure in football, but the title in Brazil was its first championship since the 1996 European Championship. When you are first, you always have something to lose, German national team director Oliver Bierhoff said. Its dangerous to think its always going to continue like that. We went through that in 1990. Ten years later, you wake up and notice that youve slept through something.Germany coach Joachim Loew hopes his team can create somewhat of a dynasty, like Spain did with two consecutive European titles and a World Cup.We want to leave our mark on an entire era, Loew said.Germany hopes to follow its World Cup triumph with the 2016 European Championship title in France. Then there are World Cups in 2018 and 2022 and another European tournament in 2020.We are still hungry, ssaid Hansi Flick, Loews assistant in Brazil and now the federations technical director.ddddddddddddNiersbach said we should be thankful and humble for what weve achieved, but promised to embark on the project for the future. The plan culminates with the 2024 European Championship that Germany hopes to be awarded. It would be a wonderful perspective for us and our most ambitious goal to get the 2024 championship and we are confident we are going to get it, Niersbach said. Not many nations are able to host a 24-team competition.Germany plans to use 10 stadiums, all of them already in existence and most used for the 2006 World Cup.Another highlight of the project is an 89 million euro ($109 million) academy to be built on the outskirts of Frankfurt, the federations biggest investment to date. The national training and research facility will be home not only to Loews team but also to all other national selections starting at youth level. Its important to use the momentum of the World Cup title and to lay down structures for future success, Bierhoff said.He and Flick will visit the United States early in 2015 to visit similar academies, and Bierhoff said the academy will also offer its know-how to other nations.Work on the academy is scheduled to start in 2016 and to be completed by the end of 2018. Frankfurt residents, however, have started a move that could end up in a referendum and ultimately scuttle the project despite previous approval and a contract with city authorities. ' ' '
OTTAWA -- Craig Anderson and the Ottawa Senators made a statement heading into the holiday break. Anderson stopped 27 shots for his second shutout of the season as Ottawa defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-0 on Monday. "We definitely had one of our better games this year and we played our most consistent game, playing hard-nosed and in their face," Anderson said. "We know they have a good team and they bring it every night and they do things right 99 per cent of the time so we found a way to win the game and do it with conviction." Senators head coach Paul MacLean was pleased with the timing of the emphatic victory. "Its the best way we possibly could (head into the break)," said MacLean. "If we were looking for something under the tree that could be a motivator for us and a feel-good thing for us, beating Pittsburgh 5-0 we can head into this three-day break with a positive attitude." The game was relatively close after two periods but the Senators dominated the Penguins in the third, outshooting them 15-9 while getting goals from Erik Karlsson, Kyle Turris and Cory Conacher. Zack Smith and Bobby Ryan also scored for the Senators (15-17-7) and Anderson earned the 24th shutout of his career. Marc-Andre Fleury made 24 saves for the Penguins (27-22-1), but saw his personal five-game winning streak come to an end. The win ended a three-game losing streak for the Senators with all three of those losses coming in Ottawa since they beat the St. Louis Blues last Monday, also at the Canadian Tire Centre. "I thought our response to the game tonight was workman like and our penalty killers did yeomen work and the difference in the game was that we obviously killed off those power plays," said MacLean after his team survived all seven short-handed situations, while scoring once in three power-play opportunities themselves. The Penguins had won 12 of their last 13 games in Ottawa, including seven in a row. Pittsburgh had only been shut out once this season as they fell 1-0 at home to the Colorado Avalanche on Oct. 21. The shutout was the first for the Senators since they blanked the Buffalo Sabres 1-0 in their first game of the season. Defenceman Marc Methot set an early tone that it was going to be a physical night. With the Penguins breaking towards the Ottawa goal, Methot took Sidney Crosby out with a hard hip check. Crosby wasnt hurt on the play but his spinning body was catapulted into Pascal Dupuis who went down and hit hard into the end boards. Dupuis left the game with what was later described as a lower body injury and did not return. Crosby was mostly ineffective the rest of the game and his immediate reaction after the game was not a good one. "I havent seen the replay. I dont know how low it was. He almost blew my knee out so it was pretty low," Crosby said. "I dont know if it was right above my knee or above my hip, but it was awfully close." Methot politely disagreed. "I have a ton of respect for that player," said Methot. "I think hes one of the best players in the world and you have to play him hard and that was our goal." The two players had a lengthy discussion before play resumed while Dupuis was attended to behind the net. "He wasnt happy about it and I wouldnt be happy either so I dont blame him for coming at me a bit," said Methot. "I thought it was a clean hit. Ive been throwing hip checks my whole career and Im six-foot three and I dont think I can get much lower than his knees." Smith opened the scoring at 6:54 of the first period when he put a backhand in a very small opening between Fleurys left skate and the post after the Penguins netminder made a pad save on Cody Ceci. Anderson held Pittsburgh at bay and stopped two Penguins on breakaways in the second period, including one shorthanded by Brandon Sutter. The other was a glove save off James Neal. In between those breakaways, Ryan scored his first goal in four games when he directed a point shot from Chris Phillips past Fleury at 5:56. It came on the same power play that the Senators surrendered on Sutters breakaway. "A big part of the game was when they get the power play goal to go up 2-0 and we have several chances on the power play," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said. "We had several good opportunities to score but we dont cash in and certainly the game turns on that stretch where we had three power plays in the second and we dont get a goal." The Penguins head into the break leading the eastern Conference while the Senators are in 10th place four points out of a playoff spot. Joseph Robert Patterson, 27, is expected to be arraigned later this week in the death of 2-year-old Tyrese Robert Ruffin, who died two days after being hospitalized with severe head injuries. Investigators allege that Patterson, the boyfriend of the childs mother, assaulted Tyrese on Oct. 9 while the two were alone in a Sioux Falls apartment. Patterson was indicted by a grand jury on Friday, Lincoln County states attorney Tom Wollman said. He was initially jailed on charges of aggravated assault and aggravated battery, though prosecutors pursued more serious charges after the boys death. A second-degree murder conviction carries a mandatory life sentence, while first-degree manslaughter carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. The charges accuse Patterson of intentionally or recklessly injuring Tyrese by causing brain damage or bleeding of the skull, from blows, shaking or making the boys head hit an object or surface. Pattersons lawyer, Tim Rensch, said his client is "absolutely and totally not guilty." Rensch said he could not yet discuss tthe case in detail because he hadnt received all of the paperwork.dddddddddddd Peterson, who has said he found out the boy was his son only about two months ago, had been working with Tyreses mother to arrange a meeting with the boy when he received a call that the child was hospitalized with severe injuries. Peterson said he raced to South Dakota and saw Tyrese for the first time a day before he died. Peterson returned to Sioux Falls on Wednesday to attend Tyreses funeral. Lincoln County court records show a July 2012 protection order was taken out against Patterson, in which he had to stay 1,000 feet away from a former girlfriend, their son and her two other boys for five years. The woman told the court that Patterson spanked her three-year-old sons bare bottom until it had welts after hearing the boy acted up at church. The woman asked the court to drop the protection order two months later, saying she wanted their son to be raised by both his mother and father. Prosecutors also are asking a judge to withdraw a suspended sentence Patterson received for a 2012 domestic assault conviction, saying he violated the deal that required him to show no violent, threatening or assaultive behaviour for three years. A hearing on that motion is scheduled for Oct. 30. ' ' '

So often for the greatest of all time, it is the final chapter in their careers that they struggle with the most. The lines, having come easy for these supreme performers for so long, suddenly look muddled and make no sense. The confident swagger is replaced by anxiety of what comes next. This leads many to tear apart the passionate bond they have created with their team in search for pastures new; a time to flirt with others in a desperate attempt to keep the dream alive for just a little bit longer. Time waits for no one, though, and eventually every athlete is forced into their final act. Having spent much of their career in control, while excelling, it is this chapter where many lose control. After all, for every Derek Jeter, there is a Brett Favre. Steven Gerrards footballing career is not coming to an end but with a remarkable piece of gratitude, his Premier League one is. Gerrard has been the gift that has kept on giving for a generation of Liverpool fans starved of success and too often forced to live in the past. Never blessed with incredible natural ability, Gerrard was the ideal Red, the perfect Liverpool player who went out and made his own moments and because of his incredible self-belief, he has been in the middle of everything great the club has accomplished this century. His latest big moment has come away from the pitch. Gerrard has embraced the final chapter by picking it up before most expected, ensuring he can write it himself. With many of their great rivals winning far more, Liverpool fans were terrified of seeing the image of Gerrard playing for someone else. Yet, this was never going to be a player who would sign for another club and play against Liverpool. The comparisons with Frank Lampard will always exist, after all the two excelled in the league at the same time, playing for England over 100 times each and 59 times together, even though they never came close to clicking as teammates. Lampard has many strengths and is entitled to his own success but make no mistake, there is no chance that Gerrards career would see him playing for another team in the Premier League and going up against Liverpool. He had chances to leave, more than once, during his time and privately, he will have wondered if he made the right choices but it was all of those times in which he said no that has now led him to the most final of yess. It was just time. There are some who have wondered if Steven Gerrard was born twenty years too late. It turned out that he was born right in the middle of greatness on Merseyside. Liverpool Football Club were the kings of English football and would go on to win 10 English titles and four European Cups between 1975 and 1990. It was a time in the world that Gerrard would have loved to play in. Surrounded by genuine superstars, he would have relished being apart of so many massiive occasions.dddddddddddd Liverpool led the way on and off the field during that time and it was no coincidence that trophies came their way because of their work in recruitment. More than anyone, they knew when to let a player leave. Better for someone to go a year early than a year late. Decades on, the team is no longer in a position to have such a stance. When greatness leaves you, sometimes your choices can be more limited. This time, it is their club captain who makes such a decision. Liverpool had offered him a new contract, yet it was one he clearly had decided against taking and no one could blame him for that. Throughout his Liverpool career, Steven George Gerrard was a talisman, a player who scored enormous goals and regularly made a massive difference over the course of 90 minutes. At 34, less and less of these games are happening. He could have accepted the clubs offer and enjoyed scoring more goals against clubs like Leicester, while sitting on the bench to rest weary limbs against others, like Ryan Giggs did in recent years for Manchester United, for example, but he knew the club had an enormous problem with this proposition. No longer close to being a genuine championship contender, Liverpool have no one in their team that they can play in midfield and make people think its a good idea to rest Gerrard. He may be way past his best but it is a true indictment on the club that he remains so valuable to them. It is a responsibility that Gerrard has embraced for years but in recent weeks, it has become a huge burden. Despite his importance, he can no longer be trusted to play deeper because the playmaking role has gone with the absence of genuine top class centre forwards. As the game at Old Trafford last month showed, he is just a vulnerable central midfielder that gets swallowed up by big games, albeit one that can still show rare moments of individual brilliance. Once again, the fact that he wasnt surrounded by top players in a top team hurt him and is now forcing him to move, but as he does, he recognizes his worth to the club and the city. Many a tear will roll down a Scouse cheek in the next six months now that Gerrard has decided to leave Anfield for good but as they wish him well in his next stage abroad, they know he has left as one of them. Fewer and fewer players in all sports have reasons to be so connected with their clubs but for Gerrard and the city of Liverpool, it was the complete opposite. He was one of their own that understood what they felt. For a community that is obsessed about their football club and what it means to play for them, this meant everything to that fan base. Liverpool lost a world-class striker and a Premier League title in 2014. A day into 2015, they are already losing something bigger. Theyll be lucky to find anyone close to another Steven Gerrard at Anfield. A place where hell never walk alone. ' ' '
ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Anaheim Ducks were eager to get back on track and the Florida Panthers paid the price. Corey Perry and captain Ryan Getzlaf each had a goal and two assists, and the Anaheim Ducks snapped their four-game home skid with a 6-2 victory over the Florida Panthers on Sunday night. "We had the puck and didnt turn it over too much. We played with the puck and found each other. Everybody was moving," said Perry, who notched his team-leading 37th goal of the season to give the Ducks a 5-2 lead at the 11:56 mark of the second period. Getzlaf agreed. "We got back to doing what we need to be doing," said Getzlaf, who is second in the NHL in scoring with 79 points. "We find a way to get open and get shots. Tonight, we clicked better." Teemu Selanne, Jakob Silfverberg, Kyle Palmieri and Perry scored during Anaheims four-goal second period. "I feel re-energized," said Selanne, who recently has been teamed with Getzlaf and Perry. "Today we were really clicking and reading each other well. The more time we spend together, the more youre going to learn from one another. It was fun to play with those guys. Theyre so dangerous and talented, so you have to be ready." Patrick Maroon also scored an early goal before leaving the game with a lower-body injury for the Ducks, who pulled within one point of San Jose atop the Pacific Division standings. Selanne had a goal and an assist, while Jonas Hiller made 28 saves for Anaheim, which is four points behind Western Conference-leading St. Louis with 11 games left. Jimmy Hayes and Tomas Fleischmann scored in the second period for the Panthers, who lost the last three games on their West Coast road trip by a combined 12-3. Former Anaheim goalie Dan Ellis stopped 34 shots in Floridas seventh loss in nine games overall. The Ducks had lost two straight and six of eight while slipping out of first place in the NHL standings, but they got back to their usual dominant selves during the second period. After Maroon scored his first career power-play goal in the first period against the NHLs worst penalty-killing team, Selanne scored his 684th career goal just 15 seconds into the second. Silfverberg scored an unassisted short-handed goal less than four minutes later, Fleischmanns eighth goal of the season midway through the second trimmed the Ducks lead to 3-2, but Palmieri and Perry scored 1:01 apart later in the period. Perrys 37 goals are second most in the NHL. Getzlaf got his 30th goal early in the third period, and new defenceman Stephane Robidas had an assist for his first point with the Ducks. Florida goalie Dan Ellis has given up 11 goals in his last two appearances. "Its a good hockey team," Ellis said. "They are one of the top teams in the West and the West is arguably stronger than the East. Theyve had a little adversity lately, but you had to be ready for a big push out of them. They are desperate for playoff position, to get home ice. They played us hard. I needed to make some key saves at key times and I didnt." Luol Deng was out with flu-like symptoms, and Kyrie Irving, who missed shootaround because he was ill, fought through his sneezing spells to help lead the Cavaliers to a 115-113 win over the Washington Wizards on Friday. Irving had 23 points and tied a career high with 12 assists and made all 13 of his free throws. Dion Waiters scored 24 points and C.J. Miles had 18 for Cleveland. "Im all right. Its the best that Im going to get right now," Irving said. The second-year guard admitted that the firing of Chris Grant, who drafted him, was troubling. "Thats the sad part, the bad part about our business. Things are going to change whether you like it or not and you still have to go out there and perform as a professional. It was probably on our minds but we cant use it as an excuse," Irving said. Cleveland took a 67-63 lead at halftime when Irving hit four free throws just before the intermission and never relinquished it. The Cavaliers took a 101-87 lead three minutes into the fourth quarter, but the Wizards, who were led by John Walls 32 points and 10 assists, couldnt make up the difference. Martell Webster hit two late 3-pointers to cut the lead to 115-113 with 2.9 seconds left. Clevelands Jarrett Jack missed two free throws with 2.2 seconds remaining. A scramble resulted with Washington getting possession with 0.2 seconds left, but couldnt get off a final shot. The near comeback didnt impress Wizards coach Randy Wittman. "We wait until the last four minutes to fly around and decide to play defence. Last four minutes of the game. Everybody will say, you gave a great effort coming down the stretch. No we didnt. For 44 minutes we didnt give an effort," Wittman said. His team didnt heed his warnings. "We told them what that organization is going through right now. Some tough times with the firing of their GM. Theeyre going to be desperate.dddddddddddd. It always happens no matter who it is that gets fired," Wittman said. Washington fell to 24-25. Its the 12th time theyre one game under .500 this season. The Wizards were one game over .500 after Mondays win against Portland for the first time since Oct. 31, 2009, but they lost in double overtime to San Antonio on Wednesday. "Were not a very good team. Good teams dont do that over and over and over and over again. We can get all caught up in .500, and I told you guys what that meant. Nothing. And think youve arrived. Good teams do not lose basketball games like this nine, ten, 11 times halfway through a season," Wittman said. Marcin Gortat had 19 and Webster 18 for Washington. "We have a lot of fans coming in, paying to watch good basketball at a high level. They expect us to win games like that -- and were losing," Gortat said. Waiters scored just four of his 24 points in the fourth quarter when he was just 2 for 7 from the field. "The energy was different, these guys knew what was at stake after going through a situation where we went through. We faced adversity and it wasnt the first time for us but at the end of the day we came out here we played hard, played for one another and we got a big win," Waiters said. Grant came under fire after he chose Anthony Bennett with the first overall pick last June. Bennett has struggled in his first months with Cleveland, though coach Mike Brown, a longtime friend of Grants, defended Bennett before Fridays game, saying hes shown great improvement recently. Bennett had eight points. NOTES: Clevelands Alonzo Gee had a season-high 11 points. . Wall addressed the fans before the game, thanking them for their support in All-Star Game voting. The fourth-year guard will play in the Feb. 16 game in New Orleans for the first time. .Washington F Al Harrington hasnt played since Nov. 12 because of right knee surgery. Wittman said he thinks Harrington will play again this season, but wouldnt put a timetable on it. ' ' '

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Sidney Crosby went through a cluster of New York Islanders like they werent even there. With the puck on his stick in overtime, all he saw was the net. And then he hit it. Crosby, who scored the tying goal in the third period, netted the winner with a brilliant individual effort 3:44 into overtime as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the New York Islanders 3-2 on Tuesday night. He stole the puck from Thomas Vanek just outside the New York blue line, streaked down the middle between two defenceman and jammed a backhander past Anders Nilsson for his 15th goal. "The puck just came to me, and I found a way," Crosby said. "I had some time to wind up and get some speed. It was a good situation. "I didnt notice how many guys were hanging on me. I just went for the net." Simple enough for Sid the Kid, who had made it 2-all with 12:00 left in regulation by firing in a one-timer from the right circle off a pass from Evgeni Malkin. Nilsson was the hard-luck loser in overtime for the second straight game. New York, which has dropped seven straight (0-5-2), gave up the lead late to Washington on Saturday and was beaten in overtime on a goal by Alex Ovechkin. "Every goal you let in is frustrating," said Nilsson, who made 31 saves in his seventh NHL game. "I thought I should have had the winner from Ovi and I should have the winner tonight." Malkin assisted on power-play goals by James Neal and Crosby to back Marc-Andre Fleury, who made 21 saves. His best stop came on Frans Nielsens penalty shot in the third when New York led 2-1. If a standard penalty was called instead of a penalty shot, it would have wiped out the rest of the Penguins power play that produced the tying goal. "That definitely might have changed things," Crosby said. Kyle Okposo scored twice in the first period for the Islanders, who are third from the bottom in the East. Despite the gap in the standings, the Islanders play the Penguins much tighter on the ice. The teams have split two games in Pittsburgh this season, following the Penguins six-game, first-round playoff triumph over New York last spring. "The rivalry is real," Fleury said. "They play us close and really make us work. They are a good team against us just about every time we play them." The Penguins (19-9-1) moved one point ahead of iidle Boston atop the Eastern Conference with their fourth straight win, and completed a 3-0 road trip.dddddddddddd Pittsburghs potent power play, ranked No. 1 in the NHL, got the Penguins back in the game. Neal connected in the final seconds of the second period, and Crosby tied it in the third. Nilsson held off the Penguins long enough for New York to salvage a point in the standings. John Tavares assisted on both of Okposos goals. "I thought we played very well," Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. "We really needed that third one and didnt get it. Its very hard for us to win with two goals. "It came down to special teams again. My frustration is the same as what the players are feeling because weve all been there." Okposo hadnt scored in eight games but he broke out with two during a 4:35 span of the first and nearly netted a third before the intermission. He backhanded a shot from the bottom of the left circle into the crease. The puck and Tavares, along with Crosby and Kris Letang of the Penguins all arrived on Fleurys doorstep at the same time. It found its way in off of Letang to make it 1-0 with 7:05 left. Okposo got even more help on his second goal, which was his eighth of the season. He wound up from above the right circle and ripped a drive that struck Fleury and then squeezed under his left arm before trickling behind him with 2:30 to go. Pittsburgh had a chance to cut into its deficit late in the frame when Vanek and Aaron Ness took penalties 1:17 apart, giving the Penguins a two-man advantage that lasted the final 37.3 seconds of the first period and 5 seconds of the second. What Pittsburgh couldnt do in the first, it did in the second when Neal notched a power-play goal with 15.6 seconds left off a feed in front from Malkin, who extended his point and assist streaks to nine games. LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Stephen Curry had 30 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds, and the Golden State Warriors clinched a playoff berth with a 112-95 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night. Klay Thompson and Marreese Speights scored 16 points apiece for the Warriors, who will make back-to-back post-season appearances for the first time in more than two decades. After blowing a 20-point lead and a chance to clinch at home against Denver on Thursday night, Curry and the Warriors are back in the post-season after snapping an 11-game road losing streak against the Lakers. Nick Young scored 25 points for the Lakers, who set a franchise low with the 54th loss of their miserable season. The 1957-58 Minneapolis Lakers lost 53 times in their 72-game season. Curry, who hit four 3-pointers, grabbed a defensive rebound with 41 seconds left to wrap up his fifth career triple-double. The speedy point guard is the first Warriors player with four triple-doubles in a single season since Wilt Chamberlain had five in 1962-63. The Warriors had little trouble with the remnants of the Lakers, opening a 20-point lead in the third quarter and cruising to just their second road win over the 16-time NBA champions in 22 games. Steve Nash and Pau Gasol sat out for the Lakers, who will miss the playoffs for just the third time since 1976. Golden State also won its season series with the Lakers for the first time since 1994-95, and the Warriors victory was their 49th, one shy of the franchises first 50-win season since 1993-94. The Warriors are likely to be the Western Conferences sixth seed, which would mean theyll return to Staples Center next week to face the Pacific Division champion Clippers. Steve Blake had 13 points, five assists and five rebounds in his first road game against the Lakers since they traded him to Golden State on Feb. 19. The veteran point guard hit three 3-pointers during his highest-scoring game since joining the Warriors. Only nine Lakers suited up, thanks to their usual lengthy list of injured players: Nash, Gasol, Chris Kaman, Kent Bazemore and Xavier Henry all sat out. Nash experienced a flare-up of his season-long problems with his back and hamstrings on Tuesday while passing Warriors coach Mark Jackson for third place on the NBAs career assists list. Andre Iguodala and Jermaine ONeal sat out for Golden State, with Iguodala resting his right knee tendinitis for the second time this month. David Lee had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Warriors, coming off the bench in his return from a seven-game absence with right leg problems. Curry was sharp from the opening tip, scoring 11 points in each of the first two quarters. Even when he missed a breakaway dunk, he got the rebound and buried a 25-foot fall-away 3-pointer. Jordan Crawfords 3-pointer set off a 17-6 run by the Warriors, who led 58-43 at halftime. Young hit a series of jumpers to trim Golden States lead to 103-92 with 2:52 to play, but Thompson hit a few big shots to wrap it up. NOTES: The Lakers had planned to wear their black alternate jerseys, but the Warriors mistakenly packed their regular blue road jerseys, forcing Los Angeles to wear its traditional home gold. ... The Clippers were angry about blowing a big lead; the Kings didnt like being in that kind of hole and nearly digging themselves out only to lose. Chris Paul scored 22 points, hitting a go-ahead free throw with 2.5 seconds left, to help Los Angeles win 103-102 Saturday. "Weve got to put teams away and not keep being in all these dogfights," Paul said. "It was kind of fitting we won with a defensive stop because weve been trying to improve our defence. Hopefully it gives us some confidence." Paul got fouled and made the first, putting the Clippers ahead 103-102, but missed the second. After a timeout, DeAndre Jordan appeared to alter DeMarcus Cousins jumper to preserve the win. "The only thing they could get was a jump shot," Jordan said. "I was just praying they didnt call a foul. They gave me a block? Thats awesome, Ill take it." Actually, although a block was immediately posted in the statistics, officials took it away in the final box score, leaving Jordan with two blocks for the game. Jordan had 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Blake Griffin finished with 16 points and 10 boards for the Clippers, who have won 11 of their last 13 against the Kings. J.J. Redick added 15 points. Pauls NBA-record streak of 13 straight games with at least 10 points and 10 assists to start a season ended when he finished with nine assists. Cousins had 23 points and 19 rebounds for the Kings, who had won two in a row. Isaiah Thomas added 22 points, making 11 of 13 free throws, and Patrick Patterson scored 21 points off the bench, combining to outscore the Clippers reserves. Afterward, Cousins tried to pull Thomas away from Jamal Crawford as they went to shake hands. "Thats just DeMarcus," Thomas said, laughing. "He gets upset. He doesnt like anybody on the other team, and thats how he is. Im all for it, but I just had to shake my guy Jamals hand." Jared Dudley didnt think much of Cousins move. "Its bad sportsmanship," he said. "Hes better than that. Someone will talk to him." Thomas and Patterson carried the Kings in the fourth, when Cousins was limited to four points and picked up two fouls on the same play. "Im tired of being a part of going down 20 and then trying to come back later in the game," Cousins said. "The way we played the last stretch of that game, weve got to start games off the same way so that we wont be in those situations and wed have a better chance.dddddddddddd" Dudleys 3-pointer pulled the Clippers to 96-95 and then Pauls 3 tied it at 98-all with 1:29 to play. Cousins missed a pair of free throws before Pauls driving layup put the Clippers, who led by nine earlier in the fourth, back in front 100-98. Thomas made two free throws for another tie at 100-all. Griffins driving dunk gave the Clippers back the lead 102-100 with 44 seconds left. Paul fouled Thomas, who made both for a 102-all tie with 24 seconds left. Thompson and Patterson combined on a 10-point run to open the fourth and give Sacramento a 79-78 lead. Travis Outlaw got called for a flagrant-2 foul for pulling down Redick on a fast break and was ejected. "I dont think Outlaw is a dirty player despite his last name," Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. "But it was just that he was trying to stop the play and he got (Redick) around the neck. You have to throw the guy out." Thomas disagreed. "I didnt think it was a flagrant-2," he said. "Travis is a guy whos never even looking to do anything like that, and the first thing they think of is throwing him out of the game. We tried to play through it, but we just couldnt get the win." Redick made just one of two free throws, tying the game at 79-all. The Kings chipped away in the third and twice cut their deficit to two points before Cousins scored their final four points to trail 75-69 going into the fourth. The Clippers were 7 of 18 from the floor, got outrebounded 15-10 and missed 7 of 9 free throws. The Clippers extended their lead to 40-20 in the second before the Kings outscored them 28-17 to end the half trailing 57-48. "Its a mental thing. You have to stay locked in," Griffin said about blowing the big lead. "They played well in the second half, but I felt like it was on us. We relaxed too much." The Clippers shot 62 per cent in dominating the first. They ran off 16 unanswered points, including four 3-pointers in a row, to go up 21-8. Dudley hit back-to-back 3s in front of the Clippers bench before they closed the quarter with six straight points to lead 29-13. Notes: The Clippers wont have to face Derrick Rose when they play the Bulls on Sunday in a second consecutive 12:30 p.m. PST start. He hurt his right knee on Friday night in Portland and is out indefinitely. ... The Kings have just four win streaks of three games or more since December 2009. ' ' '
